A Dittmer man charged with killing his brother is being held for observation at the Fulton Diagnostic Center of the state Department of Corrections, authorities say.  William K. Handley, 27, is charged with murder and armed criminal action in the fatal shooting of his brother, Kenny W. Handley, 35, on Jan. 5.

Prosecutors say William Handley is being held without bond and might be returned to the Jefferson County jail after a medical evaluation. He was reported to have been using the prescribed drug Prozac.

Authorities declined to give specifics on what led to the shooting, which took place at Kenny Handley’s home in the 9200 block of Dittmer Church Road. But they said William Handley, who lived nearby, had blamed his brother for an incident that authorities believe might not have happened.

After the shooting, William Handley abandoned his car and spent the night in a barn near Highway NN and Byrnesville Road. He was picked up by a motorist the next morning and taken to the Big River Ambulance District, where he was treated for exposure, authorities said.

The sheriff’s department said Handley had admitted to medics that he had shot his brother.
