A Moray man who attacked and threatened to kill his partner after a row was jailed for three months yesterday.

Anthony Gillies, 36, of 10 Findlater Circle, Cullen, had earlier admitted assault and breach of the peace and appeared at Elgin Sheriff Court yesterday for sentence.

The court was told that Gillies had stormed out of the house he shared with his partner and her three children in the afternoon and returned drunk several hours later.

Fiscal depute Geoff Main said Gillies became instantly aggressive towards his partner and went into the bedroom where he began hitting her on the face and body.

He said: “She fell off the bed and landed on the floor and he kicked her.”

When Gillies left the room she phoned the police but when he returned he continued to punch her and threw her on to the bed.

Mr Main said: “He was aware the police had been contacted. He told her he would slit her throat and petrol-bomb the house. She believed he was going to kill her.”

She again called 999 and ran towards the front door. When the police arrived Gillies was smashing up furniture in the bedroom.

Mr Main said:“When he was arrested he continued to make threats about his partner and was banging on the doors of the police van. He told police he would kill her and fire-bomb the house with them in it.”

Mr Main said his victim had swelling to her face and was walking in pain but refused to press charges.

Gillies’ agent, solicitor Pat Mennie, said the former roofer had been suffering from depression and was on medication and fully accepted his behaviour was “appalling”.

Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood said it was not the first time he had assaulted his partner, and Mrs Mennie said it was surprising the victim wanted to continue the relationship.

Sheriff Fleetwood, sentencing him to three months in prison, told Gillies: “If you did this to anyone other than your partner you could expect a custodial sentence, so you should not expect any different for your disgraceful behavio
