A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of cutting the throats of his sister and mother.
The women, aged 33 and 57, were discovered after police were called to a house in Royds Avenue, Airedale, Castleford, just after 6.30 on Tuesday evening.
The daughter’s nine-month-old baby son, who was in the house at the time of the incident, was unharmed.
It is understood the man, who was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, used a razor blade to slash his own throat.
The daughter staggered to a neighbour’s house to raise the alarm and paramedics were first on the scene.
Her brother, aged in his thirties, was taken to Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield, where doctors battled through the night to stem the bleeding.
He has now been discharged from hospital and is detained under the Mental Health Act.
Neighbours said the family are “quiet and polite” and have lived in the semi-detached house for over 30 years.
“They are a quiet family and never bother anyone – it’s a shock to everybody,” said one resident. “The son has suffered from depression for some time and is on medication.”
One woman who has been a neighbour for 40 years, said: “I didn’t hear anything, so it was a shock to see all the police.
“The daughter lives at home with her mother but as far as I know the son lives in a flat with his dad in Ferry Fryston. He was always all right and very helpful with me.”
The women were allowed home after hospital treatment.
