TOLEDO — A Toledo man died after using a homemade bomb to commit suicide. Police say Larry Lindner, 44, was either wearing or carrying the bomb when it exploded in the front yard of his mother’s home on Willis Boulevard.
The bomb squad believes Lindner put some type of explosive powder in a container and then used a lighter to set it off. Captain Mark Mason said, “The information we have is he exited his vehicle, walked towards the front of the house and the explosive device detonated.
Neighbors were going about their mid-morning rituals when they heard a huge explosion. Jackie Gillen said, “I was just sitting at my dining room table and all of a sudden something went boom and we thought, `What was that?'”
Police say Lindner’s mother, step-father and young niece were inside the house when the bomb went off. No one else was hurt. Investigators searched Lindner’s apartment on Gay Street, but did not find any bomb making materials. Police also searched two cars and a storage locker for possible clues.
Police say Lindner was having emotional problems and a suicide note was found inside his apartment along with medication for depression. The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms will ship evidence from the bomb to a lab in Maryland to be analyzed.
