Waukesha – An Oconomowoc woman who was charged Tuesday in the stabbing death of her baby told authorities that she heard voices, including one she believed was the voice of God, telling her to kill the baby because it was satanic, the criminal complaint says.
Dana M. Hooper, 32, is charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of the 2-month-old, identified only as H.H., the complaint says.
Her husband, Kevin J. Hooper, 33, is charged with failure to report the death of a child.
Police were called to the couple’s home Saturday after being notified by staff at a psychiatric hospital that Dana Hooper told them that she killed her baby.
$1 million bail
Bail was set at $1 million for Dana Hooper and $100,000 for Kevin Hooper during a hearing Tuesday in Waukesha County Circuit Court.
Kevin Hooper told police that he had been concerned about his wife, that a recent anti-depressant prescription had “jacked her all up” and she had not slept in five or six days, the complaint says.
After playing with the couple’s two other children outside their home Saturday afternoon, he brought the children inside, where his wife told him that she killed their baby, the complaint says.
Kevin Hooper said after determining the baby was dead, he took his wife to Rogers Memorial Hospital because he was concerned that police would take her to jail, the complaint says.
In addition to telling staff at Rogers, and later Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital, that she killed the baby, Dana Hooper also indicated that she had been suffering from post-partum depression and her new medication, sertraline (Zoloft) had “messed her up,” the complaint says.
