Mom Who Abandoned Child in Forest Sent to Prison
by Alex Carias

She was accused of abandoning her 6-year-old daughter in the Angelina National Forest. Now, Heidi Myers was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Myers cried on the witness stand on Tuesday, saying that she abandoned her daughter for the girl's own benefit. Meyers says she was already taking medication for depression, and that grief over the death of several family members caused her to become emotionally unstable. Myers says after leaving her daughter in the woods, she went to a friend's house and tried to kill herself with an overdose of prescription drugs.

Sheriff Kent Henson testified that when he arrested Myers at a bar near the scene, she appeared confused. Meyers could have gotten up to 20 years in prison.

Heidi Myers' daughter remains in the custody of Child Protective Services. She will now be placed in a permanent foster home.
