A former Roanoke resident’s unthinkable crime got national attention on the Oprah Winfrey show Monday.  In 2005, Andrea Petrosky made this call from her home in Bristol. Operator – “911, what’s your emergency?”

Petrosky – “My name is Andrea, and I’ve just, I’ve just killed my son.”

Petrosky says mental illness drove her to kill her six-year-old boy, Garrett, after she attempted to kill herself.  She made her appearance on the show to draw attention to bipolar disorder. On the show, she talks of bad thoughts in her head, about taking different medications to try to fight her depression – and about the day she took her son’s life.

Andrea Petrosky – “There was something that caused me to have this happen, because I miss him so much.  I miss being his mom.  I miss saying prayers at night.”

The Petrosky family spent several years in Roanoke, before moving to Bristol in 2004.
