CANTON, N.Y. (AP)  –  One child was improving while another remained in critical condition Thursday after being fed a “cocktail” of prescription and over-the-counter drugs by their mother, authorities said.

Canton Village Police Chief Allen Mulkin said investigators were waiting for toxicology reports to determine which drugs were in the children’s systems.

The children, Andrew Streeter, 8, and Emily Rose Streeter, 5, were in critical condition Thursday afternoon at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vt. Mulkin said Andrew’s condition was improving and he was able to talk with doctors and family members. Emily Rose remained sedated and on a ventilator, he said.

Authorities said the mental health of the mother, 33-year-old Marianne Streeter, will be assessed before any decision is made to file criminal charges. Police said she was being treated for depression.

The children were semiconscious when police found them at a hotel Wednesday afternoon. Streeter was located an hour later wandering in a cemetery in nearby DeKalb, N.Y. Police said she had overdosed on antidepressants.

Marianne Streeter remained hospitalized under police guard Thursday at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg.
