Officers shoot, kill suspect early Monday
UPDATED 7:04 PM EST Feb 24, 2014
CINCINNATI —Two people were killed at a home on Lincoln Avenue early Monday morning, one of them by a police officer.
Cincinnati police provided updates regarding the officer-involved shooting Monday morning on Lincoln Avenue.
Assistant Police Chief James Whalen said officers were sent to a home in the 1200 block of Lincoln Avenue around 5 a.m. Monday after a 911 call.
A report states that the Gregory Sanders, 37, told a dispatcher he killed his mother.
Whalen said that officers were informed on the way that there may be a homicide in the home.
Four officers responded to the scene. When they arrived, they confronted Sanders, who was sitting in his living room, Whalen said.
Sanders did not initially respond to the officers, but he picked up a Chiang Kai-shek rifle with a bayonet on the end of it, authorities said.
The officers retreated out of the house and took cover behind some police cars, but the officers said Sanders was approaching them, holding a rifle in a shooting position.
Whalen said Sanders pointed the rifle at the officers, at which point three of the four officers fired, hitting and killing Sanders.
Sanders continued walking toward police despite more than 20 verbal warnings from the officers and even after the first bullets struck him, Whalen said.
A total of 20 shots were fired by officers. Sanders was struck in the torso and in the head. The officers continued to fire until Sanders collapsed to the ground.
A woman, identified as Deborah Sanders, Gregory Sanders’ mother, was found dead inside the home, Whalen said. She suffered a stab wound, Whalen said.
Gregory Sanders resided at the home with his mother, who was gravely ill with brain cancer. Gregory Sanders was her caretaker.
According to reports, the weapon Sanders used to kill his mother was a pen. A family member at the scene said he was shocked and disturbed to find out what had happened.
“He had some mental issues, it had to be. For somebody to do something like that, they can’t be in their right mind. He needed to be mentally evaluated. He needed to be on some anti-depressants or something,” the victim’s cousin, Michael Thompson said.
In a news conference Monday afternoon, Whalen said Sanders was generally physically and mentally healthy, and there had been no significant contact with him in the system.
Neighbors said over the past week or so, Sanders had appeared stressed.
It is unclear what led to the incident, Whalen said.
Whalen also said that Sanders’ rifle was not loaded, however officers were not aware of that at the time of the shooting.
The officers involved in Monday’s incident were:
- Officer Kenneth Grubbs, member of CPD since 1998.
- Officer Stephanie Greene, member of CPD since 2008.
- Officer Michael Moore, member of CPD since 2007
- Officer William Keuper, member of CPD since 1999.
Grubbs, Greene and Moore fired their weapons. Keuper was in a different area and did not discharge his weapon.
All four officers are on standard seven-day leave after the shooting, Whalen said. He said it appears no policies were violated.
No officers were injured during the incident.
