Kym Cano Testimony Continues
In court on Wednesday, an emotional Kym Cano remembers the day she fatally shot her husband Francisco, proclaiming "I just couldn't believe that I shot him."
Kym says just days earlier, Francisco had been acting strange and drinking before his shift as a CHP officer.
Kym reported the behavior to his supervisor, who came to the Cano residence in Calexico to talk to Francisco. She said that night she "was afraid."
Two days later, on December 3rd, 2006, Kym says she argued with Francisco, who said his job was now in jeopardy.
The next morning, their troubles first seemed to have calmed down. However, when Kym reached for her pain and depression medications, Francisco shot her a "look" that scared her.
She says "he looked at me like he was going to kill me, so I started going up the stairs … I was thinking I just wanted to die and I whispered to myself I just want to die."
Kym went to the closet in their master bathroom, and saw her husband's work gun. She "put to the gun to my head and closed my eyes."
Then, Kym says she imagined her youngest daughter's face, and "decided I just couldn't do it because she needed me."
She "opened my eyes and E see him running at me. So i point the gun at the wall."
Kym pulled the trigger, claiming she thought the gun was aimed to the ceiling. Cano says she meant to fire a warning shot "so he could take me seriously, so he wouldn't kill me or do something horrible to me."
Earlier in the day, Kym Cano testified about her need for prescription medication. She claimed because of back pain and abuse, she suffered from depression and anxiety disorder and was heavily medicated.
Cano also admitted to trying to initiate an affair with a friend she met at a party, but says nothing ever happened.
But Prosecutor Marco Nunez questioned Kym's testimony. He asked Francisco had threatened to kill or hurt Kym Cano that morning. Kym's told him no.
Nunez also pointed out several inconsistencies in Kym's testimony. In a statement early in the investigation, Kym said she went upstairs to do her back exercises.
However, she never mentioned this during her testimony.
In the end, court had to end early — Kym Cano was just too emotional to continue her testimony.
Kym's testimony will continue Thursday morning
