RAPID CITY, S.D. – A 56-year-old Rapid City woman has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for shooting and killing her former husband.
Barbara Jones will be eligible for parole in 15 years, court officials said.
In October, she shot Darrel Jones, 59, at the couple’s home south of Rapid City. She pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in May.
Several friends and family members testified for Jones, saying the couple’s 30-year marriage became rocky in later years.
During the sentencing hearing, the defense presented testimony from a psychologist that Barbara Jones suffered from a deepening depression for three to four years. Her lawyers say she was treated with medication for depression over the past ten years and felt threatened by Darrel Jones and his alleged drinking.
Darrell Jones’ family members described Barbara Jones as a fun-loving, caring woman who became increasingly religious and intolerant.
Darrell Jones’ sister, Rhoda Fritz of Anchorage, Alaska, wrote the judge to ask for a 30-year sentence.
“After Barbara filed for and received a divorce from Darrell, she had money, family and friends and was free to move on with her life,” Fritz wrote. “She chose instead to end the life of her husband of more than 30 years.
“She did not give Darrell the choice to make a new life for himself, and in so doing she should not be able to move on with hers.”
Barbara Jones’ divorce lawyer, Nancy Manning, said her client never wanted the divorce. “She clearly loved her husband, but she was afraid of him,” Manning said.
