A former junior high teacher ‘s aide and drama coach will serve 1 year in jail for sexual abuse of a 16-year-old American Fork boy.
Provo’s 4th District Judge Guy Burningham also sentenced Karen Draper, 44, to 36 months of probation after suspending a prison sentence of 1 to 15 years.
Expert witnesses said Prozac and mental illness diminished Draper’s capacity to reason when she began a sexual relationship with her former student. The relationship did not involve intercourse.
Draper pleaded guilty to two second-degree felony counts of forcible sexual abuse and two third-degree felony counts of unlawful sexual contact with a minor . Initially, she was charged with 10 counts of forcible sexual abuse and two counts of unlawful sexual contact.
